Fire Portals rules

Fire Portals is a 7×7 cluster slot from Pragmatic Play, released in March 2024. It has no paylines, a tumble feature, one special wild that carries a multiplier, and a free spins round where those wilds stay on the grid. Here is every rule in the order you meet them when you play. All figures come from the game's own information pages.

The 7×7 grid and cluster pays

The game is played on a grid of 7 reels and 7 rows. A win needs at least five matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically; diagonals don't count. A cluster can take any shape, and size matters: the paytable has a separate prize for every size from 5 to 14 symbols, and a top prize for 15 to 49.

Only the highest win is paid for each cluster, wins from separate clusters in the same spin add together, and every prize is a multiple of your total bet. Seven symbols pay. From highest to lowest: the sorceress, the red flame, the gem ring, the octopus amulet, the green potion, the hourglass and the chalice. The spellbook scatter and the Fire Portal Wild complete the set.

Tumbles

After every spin, winning clusters are paid and their symbols disappear. Scatters are the exception: they stay where they are. The remaining symbols fall to the bottom of the grid and new ones drop in from above. If the new symbols form another win, it pays and the grid tumbles again, until nothing new connects.

Everything won during the tumbles is added to your balance once the sequence is over. A single spin can pay several times in a row, and each of those wins can open a new portal.

The Fire Portal Wild

The wild is a burning portal, and it never lands like a normal symbol. It appears after any win that doesn't already contain a wild, in a random position inside the area of that win, once the winning symbols have exploded. It substitutes for every symbol except the scatter, and it starts with a x1 multiplier: the game shows it as 1X on the portal.

How the portal multipliers grow, move and merge

This is the heart of the game. Follow one spin, step by step, on a grid built with the real symbols.

The full wild rules, as the game states them:

  • Every time a wild is used in a win, its multiplier goes up by x1. After the explosion, it moves one position at random, up, down, left or right, inside the area of that win.
  • Its multiplier applies to every win that contains it. The highest a wild can reach is x2500.
  • When two or more wilds are part of the same win, they merge into one after the win is paid, and their multipliers are multiplied together.
  • When wilds are shared between several wins, they merge by priority: first the win holding the most wilds, then the win with the highest-paying symbol.
  • In the base game, wilds stay on the grid until the tumbles from that spin are over. In free spins, they stay until the round ends.

Scatters and free spins

The spellbook is the scatter. It can land on every reel, it doesn't explode in tumbles, and three or more of them anywhere on the grid start free spins:

Fire Portals free spins trigger: three spellbook scatters and a 1X Fire Portal Wild on the grid
A real trigger from our demo session: three spellbooks give 10 free spins. A 1X portal sits on the right of the grid, and the win panel shows a 5-sorceress cluster paying $1.50 on a $2 bet, which is 0.75× as in the paytable.

What changes during free spins

One rule changes everything in the round: Fire Portal Wilds no longer clear when the tumbles stop. Every portal that opens stays on the grid with its multiplier until the last spin, so multipliers keep climbing and merging from one spin to the next. If portals were on the grid on the spin that triggered the round, the round starts with them in the same place, like the 1X portal in the screenshot above.

Landing 3 to 7 scatters again during the round adds 10 to 18 more spins on the same scale. The round uses its own set of reels, and the total is paid when it ends.

Fire Portals free spins: the last free spin with a 78X portal wild on the lava grid
The last spin of our bought round: one portal has climbed to 78X, and two new portals sit at 1X. The free spins world swaps the blue night for lava.

Our own test shows how swingy the round is. We bought free spins for $200 on a $2 bet in the demo: three scatters landed for 10 spins, a portal climbed to 78X, and the round paid $65.60, about 33× the bet. That's less than the price of the buy, and perfectly normal for a high volatility game: the round's value is in the rare runs where big portals meet big clusters.

Ante bet

The ante bet is the switch below the buy panel, on the left of the grid. It raises your stake by 25%: the bet multiplier goes from 20× to 25×, so a $2 spin costs $2.50. In exchange, more scatters are placed on the reels and free spins trigger naturally more often.

Two things to know: the bonus buy is disabled while the ante bet is on, and the RTP drops slightly, to 96.00%.

Buy free spins

You can skip the wait and start free spins straight from the base game for 100× your current bet, so $200 on a $2 spin. The triggering spin then lands 3 to 7 scatters at random, which means a bought round can start with more than 10 spins. Bought rounds run at 96.01% RTP. Some casinos and countries, the UK for instance, don't offer bonus buys.

The buy window in the demo: free spins for $200 on a $2 bet. The green tick confirms the purchase.

Max win

The maximum win is 10,000× your bet: $10,000 on a $1 spin. If the total win of a round reaches that cap, the round ends on the spot, the win is paid and any remaining spins or features are forfeited. Getting there takes big clusters running through big portals, which in practice means free spins.

Fire Portals paytable

What each cluster pays, as a multiple of your total bet, taken from the game's own paytable. The bigger the cluster, the steeper the jump: a sorceress cluster pays 15× at 12 symbols, but 150× from 15 symbols.

Pays × total bet. Example: 15 sorceresses on a $1 bet pay $150.

Fire Portals RTP and volatility

Fire Portals has a theoretical RTP of 96.06%: over a very large number of spins, it is built to return about $96.06 for every $100 wagered. It's a long-run average, not a promise for a session.

The game rates its own volatility as high: it pays out less often on average, but the chance of big wins in a short time is higher. Expect long runs of small clusters, with most of the value packed into free spins, where the portals stay and keep growing.

Some casinos run Pragmatic Play games at a lower RTP setting. Before you play for real, open the game's information page (the i button at the bottom left) and check the RTP line.

Fire Portals tips before you play for real

  • Play a few hundred spins in the demo first, to see how rare free spins are.
  • Choose a bet you could repeat for a few hundred spins. With high volatility, short sessions swing a lot.
  • Count a bonus buy as 100 spins of stake. It doesn't tilt the odds in your favour: 96.01% against 96.06% for normal play.
  • The ante bet makes free spins more frequent, not cheaper: you pay 25% more per spin for an RTP of 96.00%.
  • Set a budget and a time limit before you start. No strategy beats the RTP.
